THE INTERNET AND WEB PAGE DEVELOPMENT TOOLS

New to the Internet? SurfInternetOn-Line and Interactive Tutorial on Surfing the Web from the University of Utah.

Other good starting points for someone new to the Internet are:

Internet Services

CMP Net-- The Technology Internet Publisher offers a search engine to compare Internet Service Providers (ISP's) and pricing before you sign.

Herbison Consulting provides an up-todate WWW Server Index. Check out Pointers to lists of Internet access providers. Most up-to-date listing of ISP's natonwide. Searchable by state and area phone code.

PC World magazine's offering for ISP comparative shopping. Read this before you subscribe to an Internet Service.

Several companies are offering free internet services. I have not personally checked out any of these providers and can not endorse them. In general, students using these free services are satisfied. Service is 56k and unlimited. Most services are free because they sell advertising banners which appear on the browser and sell the market research from tracking your on-line activity. Theses services are a good solution for students needing a personal ISP, but understand that you'll have no privacy. If you (or someone you know) can take advantage of one these free services, here is the list as of Summer 2000:

FREE E-Mail Resources

PLEASE BE INFORMED:
  1. "Free" e-mail is often paid-for by firms making accessible your e-mail address to advertisers. By law a company offering this service MUST inform you if any information that you provide in an application for e-mail will be shared with other firms for advertising.
  2. Your professor has NOT checked out all offers for free e-mail service. In selecting a service use common-sense. If you are asked for information that you do not think should be provided, simply leave the site and try another provider.
  3. NEVER give out credit card information or very personal data. Inform the professor of any problems you have with e-mail providers. I will remove problem services from this site and also post cautionary notices. If you would like to purchase e-mail or full internet services, check out these links.
  4. ALWAYS, regardless of which e-mail service you decide to use, log off of the service when you have completed your message. If you don't log off, any one can and will use your e-mail account to communicate with anyone they please using your identity. You expose yourself to all sorts of embarrassing or legal problems when someone with evil intent uses your email account.

FREE E-MAIL ACCOUNT! "Hotmail" is a free e-mail service of Microsoft. It is popular with students who want e-mail and have no personal internet service. Expect that Microsoft will request that you provide information on yourself - to ensure that you are a "real" person and to add data to their marketing profiles. HotMail is widely used at HU!

MAIL.COM has an interesting approach: You can sign-up for free e-mail using several domain choices, such as me@mail.com or me@europe.com. Or, you can pay $2.95 a month and obtain a choice of professional domains, such as me@accountant.com or me@consultant.com.

Register with EXCITE's Free E-Mail Service. You don't have to have to pay for internet service to have e-mail.

Free Yahoo Mail.

The College Club - Only for college students. This internet club provides free membership and free e-mail, website, and connections with other college students with similar interests. A few of my students have used this service and report favorably on it.

The Electric Postcard. Send a picture post card by e-mail (free service) to your friends, courtesy of MIT.

3-D Greetings. Send via email a free personalized 3-D card for special occasions, birthdays, holidays, some with sound.

EVERYTHINGEMAIL.COM provides information and tips on using e-mail. Need HELP! try this site.

Other Things to Do With the Internet

Phone home FREE! Yup, at this site you can use your PC with internet connection to call any phone in the country (international calls available soon). You'll need a PC with internet connection and a soundcard with microphone (Sorry PC's at HU won't work). Through your PC you place a call through the Internet to Mom's home phone, so there is no long distance phone service or expense. Sites are:

Dialpad - Looks pretty easy to use. A few students have used this and report good results.
zeroplus.com -There is a $15 sign-up fee, but looks like it's free of ads, and may be worth the nominal cost.
BroadPoint - This site seems to ask you to "earn" free time

Not getting to my class on time try !Ping. This is a free service that pings your phone to wake you up, also available is a reminder service, and similar kinds of services (Mr. Notify, Ms. FollowUp).

Combine your communications services of voice mailboxes, email accounts, and faxes in one free Web-based solution. Some sites have banner ads and some play advertisements while you access your phone mail, but the services are free from:

BookMarks Plus. OK you use the university's PC's a lot but can't keep a record of your favorite sites. If you used your own PC you'd mark the site on the browser with "Favorites" or "Bookmarks". So why not use this service -- your own "bookmark" directory accessible to you anytime, anywhere, free.

Hackers

Astalavista is a European site for hackers. Here you can find downloads and links to similar sites.

Hackers Page. A list of links to related sites. This is a Dutch site.

BSA Anti-Piracy Site. The Business Software Alliance publishes NoPiracy.com to fight theft of software and codes.

Internet Fraud

Internet fraud is on the rise and you must protect yourself. As a student your greatest exposure is from e-mail (even from seemingly known sources) requesting your credit card number, unknown people using your e-mail account (because you failed to sign off), buying on-line items that have a low price but concealed add-on costs such as high shipping and handling charges, and pyramid schemes that ask you to send money to people on a list to which you add your name expecting others to send you money. DON'T BE A SUCKER! Treat your credit card like your money, always log off, shop before you buy and print a receipt of all charges, and educate yourself to recognize scams.

If you are scammed: Credit cards limit your exposure to $50.00. Contact your credit card company and report the fraud immediately. You may lose your card and $50. Report the fraud to the Internet Fraud Watch link below. If the fraud is related to anything on my site, let me know so I can remove the offending site and publish a warning to other students.

National Consumers League Internet Fraud Watch. Internet Fraud Watch is a project of the National Consumers League, America's pioneer consumer advocacy organization. IFW is designed to help consumers distinguish between legitimate and fraudulent promotions in cyberspace and to route reports of suspected fraud to law enforcement agencies. NCL has an excellant guide "Be E-Wise: How to Shop Safely Online", this is a pdf format document.

Internet Fraud watch reports that the most common Internet scams are:

1. Undelivered Internet Service Provider Services
2. Damaged, defective, misrepresented or undelivered merchandise
3. Auction sales (WEB)
4. Pyramids Schemes & multilevel marketing (MLM)
5. Misrepresented cyberspace business opportunities and franchises
6. Work-at-Home Schemes
7. Prizes and sweepstakes
8. Credit Card offers
9. Books and other self-help guides
10. Magazine subscriptions
